In 2013, Work commenced on a large reed bed to treat CSO (Combined Sewer Overflow) generated in the Cowdenbeath area. The reed bed was to be aerated by forced bed aeration and was the first of its kind in the world.
The construction of the sludge treatment reed bed at Hanningfield was completed, it consisted of 16 cells or basins and covered an area of over 4.5 hectares. Following the visit to the south of France in the year previous, Severn Trent committed to building the first full scale primary reed bed in the UK.
ARM formed an assosciation with a small company in South Africa and designed a reed bed system to treat sewage generated in a motorway service station at Lanseria.
