Aerated, Saturated Vertical Downflow – ARMStormTM
Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) and storm flow run off are becoming an increasing area of concern across the UK as these flows are often discharged, uncontrollably, into receiving waters. ARM Ltd has developed, designed and constructed a nature based CSO and Stormwater treatment solution – ARMStormTM – based on the unique benefits of wetland technology, which make it the most cost effective and sustainable way of managing and treating these high volume, event driven flows.
A major Scottish Water infrastructure development was undertaken in Cowdenbeath, West Fife, Scotland, resulting in the generation of two new Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) producing 230,000 m3 of CSO flow per annum which requires treatment prior to discharge into the local Lochgelly Burn. The ARMStormTM treatment solution was based on aerated vertical flow reed bed technology designed to treat flows of up to 46 l/sec.
The ARMStormTM system at Cowdenbeath has provided Scottish Water with an effective low maintenance treatment solution avoiding the need to construct a new Wastewater Treatment Works. The system has a relatively lower TOTEX and aesthetically and ecologically enhances the local site and provides a flexible and rapid treatment and management response to spills, whenever they may occur.
