On 10/07/2018 ARM joined more than 250 aviation experts from around the world at the bi-annual EasyJet winter readiness conference. The event was held at the Brooklands Museum in Surrey, “the birthplace of British Motor Sport and Aviation and home of the Concord”. Three major take home messages from the conference are:
- Increased onsite de-icer storage is critical for continued operation during severe weather.
- Mandatory testing of snow plans to be introduced in 2019. Plan, test review!
- Prepare for the unexpected. Weather in the UK is variable and unpredictable as evidenced by the varying winter conditionsexperienced across the past 5 winters.
Overall the event was a huge success, with an evening networking event, tour inside of the famous concord, a superb BBQ in the sunshine and opportunity to explore the museums vast displays and take a step back in aviation and transport history. Unfortunately, the success of the event was not followed up by the English National football team who were beaten 2.1 by Croatia in extra time shortly after the end of the conference!
Throughout the event an exhibition stand showcasing ARM’s experience in delivering sustainable, low cost, natural wastewater treatment solutions to the aviation industry was available along with members of the ARM team for delegates to discuss any treatment needs.
Beyond the conference key messages, is the challenging issue of managing huge volumes of storm water runoff contaminated with spent de-icing chemicals. Both aircraft and pavement de-icers are used in large volumes at airports globally during winter months, to maintain safe winter operating conditions. These chemicals are deposited widely across airport catchments, subsequently contaminating storm water runoff and representing a significant threat to freshwater ecosystems if discharged into the environment without appropriate treatment. This is where ARM can help. We are UK leading experts in the design, construction and monitoring of constructed wetlands for treatment of high strength municipal and industrial effluents such as aviation runoff. Our constructed wetland project portfolio is large having designed and constructed many wetlands throughout Europe, including an aerated wetland treating the de-icer contaminated storm water runoff from the southern catchment of Heathrow Airport.
